He Was Wounded

On a day, cold and dark,
On a hill called Calvary,
A man named Jesus
Was killed on a tree.

Not a murderer, nor a thief,
He was there to be slain.
Unjustly sentenced,
Never once did He complain.

He said to His Father,
"Forgive them, I pray,"
And opened the gates
Of heaven that day.

He was wounded on a tree
So mankind could be set free,
And He made a new covenant;
A promise to you and me.
